Seven boats, what have they in common?
Name these seven boats and what have they in common?
What have these three boats got in common? Can you name them?
186 My Di 187 Zuileka and 188 Innocence. They were all built in Wexford by Des Tyrell
Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes. Well done Clare! You have them in the correct order as well, but in what order were they first launched?
first one launched was 187 then 186 and then 188
not to be picky but boat A is Zuleika and Boat B is MyDi
Boat B This years champ Wannago
No Alan, Clare got the correct answer.
They are all Dublin Bay Mermaids!
Correct! Well done Patrick – you’re promoted to the top of the (remedial) class!
alanna 141
Correct Paddy – I though I’d sneak this one past you!
Name and Number?
Is it 123 vee
No Clare it’s not Vee, or any boat owned by your family or extended family
Is it Milkwood No 29
Is it Aoibheann think the number is 163 or banana boat as it was sometimes called
It’s not Milkwood 29, Tuskar 163 or Aoibheann 168.
Aideen 21
Alan, that’s a close guess. Close in terms of a connection between the family who owned Aideen and the mystery boat……
Una C 113 ?
Nice one Alan, it’s Una C, No. 113 built in 1963 by Tom Kearney in the East Wall premises of his father James or Jem Kearney. Jem was brother of John Breslin Kearney, the designer of the Dublin Bay Mermaid.
The family connection between 21 Aideen and 113 Una C, is that both were owned at the same time by the O’Neill family of NYC.
Zest 100
It’s not Zest!
Is it Nicah 114 or Jessie 87 as it looks like Harry skippering
Neither Nichapando 114, nor Jessie (also Reckless) 87.
Is it 54 Hycilla
It’s not Hycilla! Photo is in Wexford, early 1970′s where it was based at the time.
Is it 46 Argo
Not Argo, she’s a little younger.
Would the boat be based in Wexford again
The boat hasn’t been in Wexford for years. By the way it’s a girl’s name….
Is it Sea Wytch 150
Not ‘Sea Wytch’, this boat is older than the Wytch
Is it 71 Jeannie
Nearly there Clare, but it’s not Jeannie and unlike poor old Jeannie, this boat is still ‘alive’.
Following suggestions from various MSA members at the AGM this mystery boat is not 76 Helen, 161 Pearl, 113 Una C, 141 Alanna. This boat was very well known in her day, originally associated with Skerries, but more recently NYC.
So, keep guessing!
Is it Tijuana.
No, it’s not Tijuana!
is it 73 lively lady
No Clare, it’s not 73 Lively Lady and before you ask, it’s not 77 Tiller Girl, therefore eliminating all four Grieves brothers boats. To quote Paul Smith in his book, this boat doesn’t have the fine lines of a professionally built boat such as 131 Paula or the Grieves boats.
She was built together with five other Mermaids as part of the same project.
Is it 645 Orla
Sorry should be 65
It’s not Orla 65…..
This one seems to be challenging even the most knowledgeable in the fleet. Here’s another clue:
“I’m not Kim, but I have two things in common with Kim”.
By the way – Clare has given up on this challenge!
is it Jean, built in the barkyard in skerries by Joe Acton No 80
Very close Alan, nearly there!
81Rosalie
Jim, at last somebody got this boat. It’s Rosalie No 81, one of the Skerries Barkyard Boats from 1953, nos 80 to 85.
Two things in common with Kim, what are they?
they were both owned by Barry Neill and 81 in number
Spot on! Another challenge coming up.
Jeannie 71 was wrecked during Mermaid Week some years ago.
Where, when and how?
What other boat was damaged at the same time?
A key component of Jeannie (not foils or spars) was built into another boat. Name the item and the boat.
I think the year was 1996 she broke her mooring and came up under the quay the other boat was 186 My Di. I knew it was the year Wexford flooded
Claire, the other boat was 186 MyDi, damaged at her first championship but in 1997, not 1996. Roger Bannon had to swap into 76 Helen and nearly got arrested while ‘collecting’ Helen from John Davies garage, but that’s another story.
It was Endeavour we went back to Dublin to collect from John Davies to whom she had been lent. I was arrested by the local Gardai when trying to remove her from John’s garage.
Eventually all was explained and we got back to Wexford at 1.30am in the morning to be greeted by a huge crowd who helped to rig the boat. The following morning many of the leading lights in the class refused to go on the water, delaying racing until Endeavour was ready to be launched. Endeavour went on to finish 2nd beaten by the smallest possible margin by Zuleika when Derek managed to pass 7 boats on the last leg of the last race to beat us by a 1/4 point after we had won the last race by 6 minutes.
There was a memorable last night which culminated in Jim Dempsey, Derek Joyce and myself drinking a bottle of Black Bush as the dawn broke after demolishing many bottles of champagne which had been given by me to all that had helped to save MYDi that awful night when she ended up on the rocks in front of the Talbot Hotel. I well recall that Jim Dempsey nearly broke his leg trying to protect the boat and it was Peter Scallen skill in a powerful rib which eventually saved the day and avoided a total loss.
Her centre case is in my boat.
Sorry Thumbalina 26
I didn’t think you’d miss this one Patrick – you’re correct of course.
Do you know what happened just after this photo was taken?
Where? When? Name any significant boats. Explain circumstances…..
Much too easy Peter I will never forget but will leave this one to someone else
Thought you’d remember this one Clare!
zuelka 187 Des Terrell launched 2002
Yes it’s Zuleika No.187 built by Des Tyrell, but 2002 is not the year!
Does anyone know the year?
Don’t know what I was thinking the years are going by to fast I must be getting on. Lunched in Skerries 1996
That’s right – 1996, same age as one of her crew!
This one is for the real Mermaid nerds!
What is the maximum length of the mast? (Answer in Imperial rather than Metric – this is Mermaids afterall!)
And for bonus points – where should the two coloured bands be?
The max lenght is 24′ 10” and the bands should be 3′ 10” above heel of mast and the lower edge of the upper band shall not be higher than 19′ 10” above the uppr edge of the lower mast bend
Clare, you’ve clearly been swotting up on the ‘Blue Book’. New challenge coming up, in the meantime, the Blue Book is downloadable – http://www.dublinbaymermaid.org/downloads/MermaidSpecification2007.pdf. It needs some updating though, see Roger’s comments on the Technical Blog.
Do you know this boat? Name and number please
no.146 Fugitive
That’s correct Paddy. A bigger challenge coming up!
No 11 Oonagh
No to both 11 Oonagh and 26 Thumbalina!
Thumbalina 26 just because I don’t want to get caught out.
seria no 38
syrena no 38
Correct. It is Syrena. She has a distinctive shape to her planks below the waterline!
don’t know but i think the photo is in clontraf
Paddy, yes the photo is in Clontarf. The angle of the shear strake on this boat is distinctive, also note the deck width.
While the photo is in Clontarf, the boat is not from Clontarf.
No 17 but cant remember the name
Changd my mind it is no 18 Clare
It’s neither 17 Maeve nor 18 Claire!
Is it Celia No.5, also any possibilty of an open forum i am restoring a mermaid at the moment and would appreciate some questions answered by mermaid sailors, cheers
Kinearly – no it’s not Celia No. 5. Hint – the boat carries a girl’s name!
Good point on open forum. I’ll put one together. In the meantime check out the Akita page via GALLERY
Check it out !!!! i printed it off and now know it backwards,
Sean Rooney, Joe Boylan, Jim Dempsey, Paul Winters & Sam Shiels have all patient and generous with the time and knowledge without them dont think we would have got so far. Roll on 2011 season.
But do you know the boat?
Can you make it that we can enlarge the image?
As it is a girls name would it be no 76 Helen as Jill would normally sail over from Dun Laoghaire and would not be on the hard
It’s not Helen!
Sorry Patrick, that’s all you get – do you want to make it too easy?
Aideen 113
Paddy, it’s neither 113 Una C, nor is it 21 Aideen!
Nor is it a clubmate of either of these two boats……
Deirdre no. 90
Not Deirdre! The late Peter Dunne would be shocked at the thought, particularly when you realise which boat is in the photo.
Did she compete in the last 2 championships?
Elizabeth No 36
Well done Alan. It’s Elizabeth. She has a slightly different shape on the Shear Strake, due to modifications where she was widened. All legal I’m assured!
Is it 77 Tiller Girl, but dont think it loks like her trailer
166 Isadora
93 Swallow
Elizabet No 36
Too late Patrick – Alan was there before you!
Another one, a little more difficult this time.
Eimear Aris
Well done Clare. What’s the sail number?
57
Yes, No. 57 Eimear Aris (also know as Aille and Eimear in the past was built in 1957 by N. Boden.
Here’s a view of the transom of a well known boat – she’s fast too, the transom is the most common view that most Mermaiders have of this boat.
That has to be Cara II, 135 no?
Sorry Niall, try again!
Would it be Vee, 123 – Rush?
Thats Lively Lady, 73
Well done Roisin, it’s 73 Lively Lady, probably the fastest boat never to have won a Championship.
Innocence 188
Paddy, well done again!
There’s a new mast head on the Mermaid website – what boat is it?
Also in the Blog masthead, name the three sailors and the boat.
JILL : Mermaid week in Rush 2008
Well done Paddy – new challenge coming up!
Kevin Therese Mc Huge and Tall Paul in Helen
Spot on Paddy!
Sorry I didn’t see this earlier. Obviously the first Paddy at 23:38 is correct, Paddy Dillon at 23:46 is wrong. And I still don’t see the three crew named!

all national champions more than once
Mermaid Sailor 19:49 on 6 March 2011 Permalink |
Yes David, but that’s not the full story. 15 boats have won more than once. Why is there only seven boats here? Can you name them?

All won the nationals four or more times also two consecutive years.
Mermaid Sailor 17:15 on 7 March 2011 Permalink |
Well done Martin. All have won four times or more. The photo of Boat A, may actually be a photo of Elf’s twin sister 31 Eva, it’s taken from Paul Smyth’s book
