    Birthday Party for Endeavour

    Roger Bannon writes:

Endeavour 102 will be 50 years old in February 2012. I have owned her since September 1983 and 6 others owned her prior to this.
We plan to host a birthday party for Endeavour in the National Yacht Club when everyone who owned and sailed her over the years will be invited to attend.
From speaking with a few of the previous owners, we think that at least 150 different people sailed on her during her lifetime!
I might have to varnish and repaint her for the first time in 12 years as we hope to have her in the dinning room for the event and need her to be looking at her very best.
She was the first Mermaid John Brennan built on his own, under the supervision of the late Johnny Walker and we hope John will be able to attend.
Please let me know if you qualify to participate in this unique celebration.

How about a Mermaid email address?

You can now have an email address incorporating your boat’s name (e.g. Amy@dublinbaymermaid.org). Any emails sent to your Mermaid address will be automatically forwarded to an email address you nominate. If you sell the boat, the address can then be diverted to the new owner.

Contact web@dublinbaymermaid.org to have your email address set up.

Note: email addresses will only be allocated to the registered owner of a boat. The only format that can be used will be the registered current name of the boat.

    Rush Regatta

The Rush Regatta is on this weekend. Paddy Dillon in 131 Wildwind has a good record here, but will fellow local sailors Anthony Carthy in 189 Innocence or Jim Carthy in 123 Vee prevail?

    More Cots

There’s five cots out today. They’re using sails numbered 137, 141 and 122…..  all acquired from you know where!. There’s a Community scheme in Maudlintown (South side of Wexford town) involving young people mentored by experience boat builders.  They’re building new boats and restoring old boats.   They could do with some help – have you any spars, sails, cleats etc. that you would like to give to this group?

The Mermaid Youth Championship is currently dominated by Rush sailors. There are two categories – Under 25 and Under 18. Numbers have dropped in recent years. The event needs a change. What do you suggest, have your say here. Comments here will be monitored by the MSA Committee and will be considered in any decision. (Click on REPLY top right).

Was there any suggestions made at the AGM that we could vote on?

      • Mermaid Sailor 20:32 on 24 February 2011 Permalink | Reply

Patrick, see report of AGM further down this blog. No suggestions were brought to a vote, but the meeting decided to request that this online forum be part of a consultative exercise for a month or so. Alternatively write to the Hon. Sec. at secretary@dublinbaymermaid.org.

I think the main issue to be resolved is, will Rush host the event again? ifso surely a commitment from each club to send at least 2 boats is not asking to much. Class captains from each section could organise junior crew and skipper/owner could be on the boat. I think this is very important for the future of the class. The Rush sailors spoke very passionatley in favour of this event, is just needs support and commitment from the other clubs. Count me in.

      Una C 113 ?

      • Mermaid Sailor 20:38 on 28 February 2011 Permalink | Reply

Nice one Alan, it’s Una C, No. 113 built in 1963 by Tom Kearney in the East Wall premises of his father James or Jem Kearney. Jem was brother of John Breslin Kearney, the designer of the Dublin Bay Mermaid.

The family connection between 21 Aideen and 113 Una C, is that both were owned at the same time by the O’Neill family of NYC.
